Social Media in Numbers

More than 2,000,000,000 searches are performed through Google every day

To date, Technorati has more than 133 million blogs in their database

In 2009 Twitter exceeded more than 1,360,650,000 tweets

700,000,000+ pictures are uploaded to Facebook each month

Digg receives approximately 38,00 “digs” each month

4 years ago Youtube calculated that it would take 412 years to watch every video posted—add to that over 13 hours of video uploaded every minute

Those are impressive numbers. But social media is a grey area that is difficult to explain. It comes in many forms, but some of the main ones include:

Forums: This is one of the original forms of social media, one that started long before social media became popular. These forums are used for discussion on specific niches.

Blogs: These are the most well known forms of social media and also the most obvious. They are defined as updated hubs of information that allow viewers to get involved through commenting.

Image Sharing: Sites such as Flickr, photobukcet, and the newest Pinterest are social sites where users can upload images an allow others to comment on them. They are highly poular.

Micro-blogging: This form of social media combines blogging and social networking. It only allows users to post small amounts of content at one time by way of a web site or application. Twitter is a micro-blogging site.

Social Networks: The likes of Facebook, Bebo and Linked are can be referred to as full blown social network sites. They allow users to create accounts that allow many different types of posting including status updates, groups, blogs, and image sharing.

How do you keep track of all of this?

We’ll save that for another day…
